Anatoly Yasinsky: A Physicist Who Explains Yoga and Qigong
I am a physicist by training, a health qigong instructor, a yoga therapist and a meditation teacher. I have been practicing Eastern disciplines for more than 25 years and have studied in Russia, China and India. Today I live in Burgas, Bulgaria, where I teach qigong classes and lead retreats around the country. I write about yoga and qigong the way a physicist understands them: through biomechanics, breathing and the nervous system, without esotericism.

My path
From boxing and Phystech to yoga and qigong
I have done sports since the age of fourteen, and almost always it was combat sports: boxing at school, sambo at university, hand-to-hand combat in the army. Alongside that came mathematics: a specialized math class, city olympiads, and then the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. I interrupted my studies at Phystech to serve in the Airborne Forces, and after the army I came back and graduated as a physicist.
The next twenty-five years were all about computers. I started out assembling circuit boards and ended up as the founder and head of Meijin, a company that built professional and gaming computers and was one of the first in Russia to fit them with water cooling.
All those years Eastern practices went hand in hand with work. Starting in 2000, I trained for twelve years at Valery Gusev’s Western Dragon wushu school, three times a week at seven in the morning. Every session began with breathing exercises, yoga stretching and moving meditation, and only then came technique and sparring. That is where my habit comes from: I don’t split practice into “yoga” and “qigong”, I take the best from both systems.

Teachers and schools

Shaolin and Wudangshan
I studied qigong with Master Shi Yan Bin, a 34th-generation Shaolin warrior monk, and passed a qigong examination at his school. I traveled to Wudangshan in China, the home of Taoist practices, to study qigong and tai chi with masters of the Dragon Gate school. I am still studying the health qigong system Daoyin Yangsheng Gong.

Yoga therapy and meditation
I studied yoga therapy at the Institute of Eastern Methods of Rehabilitation in St. Petersburg and defended a thesis on hatha yoga exercises as a method of adaptive physical education. I learned meditation in Goa, India: in 2019 I completed the teacher training course of the Sarvaguna academy, registered with Yoga Alliance.

My approach
Practice without esotericism
People often ask me how a physicist can practice qigong. In my view, that is the only way worth practicing it. Ancient traditions described real effects in the language of their time. Today the same effects can be explained in the language of physiology. Such an explanation does not cancel the tradition. It helps you see what in it actually works, and why.
That is why my classes and my writing contain no promises of miracles or energy channels. Instead, there is an honest conversation about where scientific evidence ends.
There is a straight back, calm breathing, a strong body and a clear head.
What I do now

Qigong classes in Burgas
Morning group qigong classes: indoors at the Amrita Center and outdoors in the Sea Garden. We learn classic health qigong sequences, breathing and standing meditation. Schedule and sign-up are on the Qigong in Burgas page.

Retreats
Weekend yoga and qigong retreats in beautiful places around Bulgaria. The first one takes place in October 2026 in Madzharovo, in the Eastern Rhodopes. I lead them together with Anastasia Yasinskaya, PhD in medical sciences, yoga and yoga therapy teacher and nutritionist. Details are on the Retreats page.

The book “Yoga vs Qigong: Basic Techniques”
In the book I brought together the foundations of both systems: how to sit correctly, pranayama, the yoga sequence Eye of Revelation (the 5 Tibetan Rites), the Shaolin qigong sequence Yi Jin Jing, the standing meditation Zhan Zhuang and relaxation meditation, plus a theory section on the physics of the body. 235 pages, more than 200 photos and video lessons via QR codes. The book is available in English, Bulgarian and Russian, as an e-book and as an audiobook.

I write for Yoga Journal: about the physiological similarities and differences between yoga and qigong, and about how breathing practice changes at high altitude. The Russian magazines Era Zdorovya and Moi Goda have written about my project “Yoga and Qigong without Esotericism”. On YouTube I publish the video lessons for the book and the project “Qigong from Behind”, where the sequences are filmed from the back, so you can follow the instructor without mirroring the movements in your head.

I love the mountains. In winter it’s snowboarding and skiing, preferably off-piste; in summer, mountaineering and rock climbing. I ride a bike every day, lift weights now and then, and used to freedive, going down to 35 meters without scuba gear. In all of this I rely on what yoga and qigong teach: a flexible body, the ability to relax unnecessary muscles and to breathe deeply under load.
